This color was developed by a French privateer in 1666 when he spilled wine onto his pair of black-and-white striped socks. Actually we have no way to prove that, but the color definitely reminds us of wine. It's a nice dusky shade for those more subdued days when you can't decide between pink, red, and purple. "Sockre bleu!" he said, even though they aren't blue.
